Cantu leave-in conditioner

Hey guys! I hope you all are doing great. Today I am going to give my review on Cantu Shea butter Leave-In Conditioning Repair Cream. This leave-in conditioner is a curly/wavy hair friendly product. As I got many requests to do reviews on curly hair friendly products, I am dedicating this week’s posts to all the curly heads out there.

Around 40-50 years ago people sought after curly heads as they felt curls looked so beautiful and they were so much in trend. Gradually, curly hair became undesirable and everyone started going after stick straight hair which is so frizz- free and manageable.

Lots of chemical treatments have come up to turn your hair straight and wonderful. Now, the curly hair trend is coming back, better than ever. People are embracing their curls! I have curly hair and I’ve never really liked my hair because it is always so frizzy and unmanageable. I used to straighten my hair often till my hair became damaged and even frizzier. It was then when I first started reading about curly girl method. Though I have never really stuck to that method, I started using products targeted specifically for curly hair which started making a good difference to my hair.

Cantu Beauty is an award-winning brand with ultra-moisturizing products targeted for hair, scalp and skin. All their products are made with 100% pure shea butter. Okay so let’s get on with the review.

I got this from Walmart, US for $6.99 for 453 g. It is available in amazon for Rs.1299. Yes, it’s a little pricey but they use good quality and toxin-free ingredients. The quantity is also enough to last for some time. I have been using this product for about 4 months now, and still have reached only half of the tub. You can shop from amazon at

The product comes in a good quality, round tub container with a sturdy orange lid. It is travel friendly.

Consistency and smell:

The product is not so thick or liquidy. It has medium consistency and the product slips easily through wet hair when applying. It has got a nice pleasant smell. I really like the smell of this conditioner.

Product Claims

This product claims to provide intense moisture, leaving hair soft and manageable. It is specially formulated for damaged, dry or coarse hair. This product is great for relaxed, texturized, coloured, and permed hair. It can be used as a leave-in overnight treatment, for daily styling and to get frizz free hair.

It has natural ingredients like shea butter, olive oil, canola oil, glycerin, hydrolyzed wheat protein, hydrolyzed collagen, orange peel oil, sage oil, nettle extract, rosemary leaf extract, aloe vera leaf juice, yarrow extract and kiwi fruit water.

As for proteins, it contains hydrolyzed wheat proteins and silk amino acids.

Now coming to silicones, it has dimethicone, dimethicone PEG-8 Meadowfoamate, cyclohexasiloxane, and cyclopentasiloxane. In this, dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane are water insoluble and need a sulphate shampoo to be washed off from hair. It also has isopropyl alcohol in it.

curly hair

I’ve been using this product for 4 months now. I apply this product right after I step out of shower, when my hair is wet. This conditioner is very moisturizing. Though it does not provide much hold on the curls, it definitely tames frizz. But I apply only a small quantity as this conditioner is a little heavy and tends to over-moisturize and weigh down my thin hair. My husband who has thick, coarse curly hair loves this product.

  • Manages frizz
  • Highly moisturizing and hydrating
  • Makes curly/wavy hair manageable, shiny and soft
  • Reduces hair breakage and split ends and makes hair stronger
  • Pleasant smell
  • It is not curly girl method approved as it has water insoluble silicones and alcohol
  • Tends to weigh down thin hair
  • Its pricey

Though this leave-in conditioner is not curly girl method friendly, I like it as it tames my frizz, making my hair look healthier. My husband really likes this product as it tames his frizz and makes styling much easier. This product is more suitable for medium to thick hair.

Rating: 3.9/5.0

I was disappointed to know that it contains water insoluble silicones as I don’t prefer using a sulphate shampoo. Silicones are not harmful but a sulphate shampoo is required to remove insoluble silicones. I have given minus marks just for this aspect. If you are a strict CG method follower, then this product is not ideal for you. But for the rest, this product is worth trying. Apart from that, this product is great and works well on my hair. This product works well on thick wavy hair too.
